On Dec. 5, Akron Community Foundation (ACF) announced grants totaling $1,517,051, including $1,063,551 in grants from designated, donor-advised, agency endowment and scholarship funds and $453,500 in health and human services grants, which will fund 34 local nonprofit agencies that provide for residents’ health, wellness and basic needs.
The organization announced that funding for the competitive health and human services cycle will be supplemented by $177,195 from the Howard Atwood Family Fund, H. Peter Burg Fund, Bonnie L. and Ernest R. Estep Fund, Medical Mutual Community Investment Fund, Read Family Fund, David R. and Cheryl L. Venarge Fund, and two anonymous funds. In all, 30 local health and human services programs will benefit from what ACF’s President and CEO John Petures Jr. called “grant co-investing.”
The grant co-investment program began earlier this year when the foundation invited several corporate- and donor-advised fund holders to participate in a pilot program during its arts and culture cycle, offering fund holders the opportunity to review competitive grant applications for funding consideration. Since then, fund holders have agreed to co-invest nearly $400,000 to local programs.
“We are pleased that so many of our fund holders find value in what we learn about local nonprofits and community needs during our competitive grant-making process,” Petures said. “We’re happy to keep them informed so they can make wise decisions with their personal philanthropy, and hopefully we can introduce them to effective programs in their areas of charitable interest.”
Foundation officials state the health and human services grants were awarded from the following field-of-interest and unrestricted funds, which were created by charitable residents to support emerging needs in our community: Adam Fund, V.E. (Tom) Atkins Fund, Board of Directors Annual Giving Fund, Community Fund, Charles C. and Dorathea S. Dilley Fund, C. Colmery Gibson Polsky Fund, Arthur Kelly Fund, William C. Krisher Fund, Helen S. Robertson Fund, James G. Robertson Fund, Roush Memorial Fund, Sanatorium Contingent Fund and Shaw Foundation Fund...
