Lorain County Health & Dentistry has opened a new clinic as part of a major renovation for Elyria’s Wilkes Villa complex.
The new building at 105 Louden Court, Elyria, replaces a temporary medical mobile unit that Lorain County Health & Dentistry began operating since April 2014.
The new 3,000-square-foot clinic becomes the fourth service site for Health & Dentistry, which has two sites in Lorain and now two in Elyria. It will offer pediatric care for patients newborn to age 19 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
“We feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to bring health care into Wilkes Villa and the surrounding neighborhoods,” said Stephanie Wiersma, chief executive officer of Lorain County Health & Dentistry. “We know and understand that unreliable transportation is a barrier to accessing health care. Opening a medical site in Wilkes Villa removes that barrier and makes health care convenient for those most in need.”
The agency is recruiting to hire additional medical providers to offer women’s health and prenatal care and adult medical services. Integrated behavioral health services also will become available.
The Louden Court site is open to all, including families and children living in surrounding neighborhoods. Health & Dentistry accepts most private insurance, Medicaid and Medicare, and discounts are available for qualifying uninsured patients.
The new clinic is the beginning of a plan to reinvent Wilkes Villa with new housing and services, said Homer Virden, executive director of the Lorain Metropolitan Housing Authority.
The Housing Authority is in a multi-phase renovation of Wilkes Villa, an apartment complex with about 181 units.
“The new clinic is a compliment to the three-star Horizon child care facility that is housed in the same building,” Virden said. “Wilkes Villa residents and the surrounding community now have access to excellent child and health care.
“In addition to service, jobs have been created that benefit the entire community.”
Lorain County Health & Dentistry plans a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the new center sometime soon.
