County prepares for Zika

"LANCASTER - Fairfield County Health Department Administrator Larry Hanna said there are no known local cases of the Zika virus yet. But he said the health department is devising a emergency preparedness plan for if and when it does hit.

"'Right now, we're working on a grant with Ohio EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) to try and get probably a summer person to help with monitoring, going out and setting the (mosquito) traps and picking the traps back up so we can send them up to be tested,' he said. 'And I'm working with some other agencies in the area to maybe line up the services if we need to do some adult spraying or fogging in certain areas.'

"But he said spraying is more of a short-term solution for small areas.

"For the long term, Hanna said the health department plans to educate the public on how to deal with Zika and ways to avoid providing breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

"Hanna said the Ohio EPA hopes to grant $250,000 for southeast Ohio mosquito control and he hopes Fairfield County gets some of it.

"Hanna said the county has also purchased larvicide to use in areas where there are a lot of mosquitoes, like small ponds, to prevent them from breeding..."
